Gurugram, like several planned cities in the National Capital Region, is organised into numbered sectors, each generally functioning as a distinct planning unit with its own residential, commercial or mixed-use character.

Sector numbers do not necessarily indicate geographic proximity to one another in a simple sequential way, so two sectors with close numbers may sometimes be located a meaningful distance apart depending on how the city expanded over time.

For newcomers, it is generally more useful to orient by corridor (such as Golf Course Road or Sohna Road) alongside sector number, since corridors often provide a more intuitive sense of location and connectivity.
